Dr. Heather G. Cordova is a 1998 graduate of UTCVM. She has been on staff at MPEC since 2009. She is a part-time veterinarian and a full-time homeschool mom. Dr. Barry enjoys hiking, horseback riding, gardening, and reading.

Know the signs of a pet emergency

Bring your pet in at the first sign of an emergency

When your shows signs of an emergency, it's important to have him or her seen as fast as possible.

Emergency symptoms include:

  • Difficulty breathing (blue tongue or raspy breath sounds)
  • Swollen or distended abdomen (with or without vomiting)
  • Inability to urinate or defecate or straining
  • Inability to stand or walk and loss of balance / collapse
  • Vomiting or diarrhea with blood
  • Heatstroke (heavy panting, weakness, or temperature above 104 degrees)
  • Bleeding that occurs for more than 5 minutes

If you're bringing your pet in due to a wound and the bleeding will not stop, remember to apply pressure to the wound while traveling to the clinic.

7 Things You Should Know in Case of an Emergency with your Pet

Know when it's an emergency situation

PWhen your pet has been involved in an accident, it's important to rush him or her to the clinic for immediate care.

Emergency situations include:

  • Penetrating wounds (bite, gunshot, stab, etc.)
  • Traumas (being hit by a car, falling from a height, experiencing a blunt force)
  • Ingestion of toxin (chocolate, rodenticides, prescription, over-the counter, illegal drugs, artificial sweeteners, nicotine, household cleaners)
  • If your pet has ingested a toxin, please bring the container with you to your visit.

    It's important to bring your pet in after any of the listed events occur, even if there are no signs of ill effects.
